"When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear"

--Patricia McKillip, The Riddle-Master of Hed

I am going to start filtering some of my more private musings. Since blogger does not have a tool for that, you will need to visit my Live Journal and ask to be friended there. I will continue to post Daily Gratitude and other subjects here.

There is also a FAQ for my Journal at the same link.

Wow, I knew I didn't write much last week, but I hadn't realized I didn't write at all! We both had trouble sleeping last week, so it was hard to face the computer with any sort of coherency. Of course, it was also the official start of the television "season" which accounted for many hours of watching shows and discussing them.

In addition to the lack of sleep, I've been having problems with my back and my feet for the last several months. I know it's a combination of mattress, chair at work, and shoes that are making my back hurt and shoes that are hurting my feet. There's no way we can afford a new mattress anytime soon, but I'm considering getting some decent shoes -- only problem is finding the money when we have so little extra sitting around. I was able to rearrange my desk Friday to be more ergonomic, and I think it's helping my posture a little, which should help my back. We'll see.

About three weeks ago, boy and I made a conscious decision to go forward with changes in our diet that we'd been discussing pretty much since we got together. While having a slave chef had improved the quality of the food I eat, more vegetables, more fresh foods, healthier portions, etc., we were both consuming lots of junk. We agreed to cut out most of that -- giving up soda, candy, increasing our intake of fruits and even starting a regime of kefir. The result is that my diet has very little refined sugar, next to no caffeine, and a significantly reduced amount of commercial preservatives and chemicals. boy still has his coffee and nicotine, but he's also cut way back as well. Actually, he's doing better than me because he doesn't work at an office where they bring in treats regularly (I resisted the krispy kremes two weeks ago, but gave in to the bakery cookies yesterday).

The unexpected bonus is that last night I realized I'd started my period. We were both astonished because usually we spot my hormones kicking up before I start bleeding. PMS is something I know well and boy has learned my symptoms over the past fifteen months. This month, though, there was no exhaustion, no body clues, and only one incident of over-emotionality that could very well have been stress-induced rather than hormone-related. You hear for years that changing diet is the best way to reduce PMS, but you can't imagine ever giving up the caffeine and sugars (and chocolate!) for even the few weeks required by your cycle. Then, one day you realize that changing your diet for your overall health has the same effect -- however unintended it may have been.

Of course, we'll have to give it a few more months to see if it holds or was a one-time fluke, but I tend to lean toward giving credit to the research that's argued for years that caffeine and refined sugars are bad -- for female hormones as well as the body as a whole.
