"When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear"

I am going to start filtering some of my more private musings. Since blogger does not have a tool for that, you will need to visit my Live Journal and ask to be friended there. I will continue to post Daily Gratitude and other subjects here.
There is also a FAQ for my Journal at the same link.
same-sex marriage

I've resisted addressing this topic for months. After reading much in the news over the weekend and early this week about the state I almost lived in (MA) and the state where I now live (AZ), I'm just weary.
For me the issue is so simple, and yet I've not heard one person in the media reflect our view. Of course, I've barely read a fraction of what's out there, so maybe there are people expressing the same thoughts.
Same sex couples have been getting married for years and years and years. This movement isn't about the right to marry, it's about the right to have same-sex marriage recognized legally by the government. George Jr. has stated that marriage is a "sacred union" and I agree with him. Marriage is a religious institution. In a country where "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" why the hell are there so many laws out there granting privileges to people based on their participation in a religious union?????
Should there be some sort of recognized partnership that allows people to register as couples/households for the purpose of taxes, estate planning, insurance, etc.? Yes. But it should be a completely separate, purely legal designation rather than one based on centuries of religious tradition. Civil Unions for everyone and those that participate in religion can have their marriage just as baptisms registers a person's "birth" within their church separately from registering a birth with the government.
Any lawyer out there want to take on the morass of marriage-based laws as Unconstitutional?
I respect that marriage works for many people. I resent the focus being placed on the desire of the masses to have a state-sanctioned religious union. The result will be that I will never be able to have my relationship recognized for insurance, estate-planning, and tax purposes, because my spiritual beliefs don't include marriage.
