"When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear"

--Patricia McKillip, The Riddle-Master of Hed

I am going to start filtering some of my more private musings. Since blogger does not have a tool for that, you will need to visit my Live Journal and ask to be friended there. I will continue to post Daily Gratitude and other subjects here.

There is also a FAQ for my Journal at the same link.

must-see movie
Wednesday, September 15, 2004 @ 19:53

I was finally able to take boy to see "A Day Without A Mexican" on Sunday. It came to Phoenix about three weeks ago, but we hadn't been able to coordinate our schedules with our budget until then. We both feel it's an incredible movie. Social satire isn't done much anymore, or if it is no one is telling us where to find it. Even if you look past the obvious political message (at least political wherever there is a shared border with Mexico and a "problem" with illegal immigration), there are some pretty intense cultural and social messages in the movie.

The premise is that one day Californians wake up and they are cut off from the rest of the world by a mysterious fog. In addition to having no way to interact with the outside world, suddenly 1/3 of the population has vanished: all "Mexicans" and those of "Mexican"-descent. (The general public being too ignorant to realize that there are dozens of nationalities making up what they consider "Mexican" is one of the running themes.) The official website is www.adaywithoutamexican.com. They have archived articles about the movie and links to some cool merchandise. The list of theaters is outdated, though. Check your local listings as the movie has spread to other markets in the last month. It's opening in Chicago, New York, and several other cities this Friday (September 17th).

Of course, now I want to see what happened to the rest of the country while California was cut off, but that's just me *bg*
