"When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear"

--Patricia McKillip, The Riddle-Master of Hed

I am going to start filtering some of my more private musings. Since blogger does not have a tool for that, you will need to visit my Live Journal and ask to be friended there. I will continue to post Daily Gratitude and other subjects here.

There is also a FAQ for my Journal at the same link.

Another trauma
Monday, November 21, 2005 @ 19:28

Last weekend I started a log of the trip and what we've been up to since we got here. Before I could find time to post it, I had a major accident: I dislocated and broke my left ankle, tearing several ligments in the process on Monday night. After hours in the ER, I was admitted to the hospital and had surgery late Tuesday morning. I now have a metal plate and screws in my ankle and a cast. I go in on Dec 1st for a progress check and recasting. No weight on the foot for 6-8 weeks. It could take up to a year to rehab it back to "normal" - whatever that is.

So, now I'm home with my leg elevated most of the time and in pain whenever I hobble around on crutches. boy is left the primary caretaker for mysElf, my mother, and still has to help out my sister whenever possible. We're looking at thousands of dollars in hospital bills (I have no health insurance) and neither of us is likely to find work for several months. (boy has to be home to take care of us and what employer is going to hire someone on crutches with a cast?) On top of our already hefty debt from moving, it's going to be awhile until we can get on top of things and get money saved to return to Phoenix.

The love and support of our friends has been amazing. They kept boy grounded and supported while I was in the hospital via phone calls and e-mails and have stayed in touch with both of us throughout. It's gratifying to know we are so beloved and that our leather "family" would be there for us in a heartbeat -- even if they are 1500 miles away. It just makes us more determined to return home as soon as we are able.

Here is the link to my "transition log" -- it's a factual journal and I'll try to go back in the next few days and flesh it out. I'm sure I'll have lots of free time in the coming weeks to do plenty of housekeeping of the websites and updating of various sections. I'm determined to do whatever is necessary to keep from going stir crazy -- after all, it's only been a week since I fell.
