"When you open your mind and hands and heart to the knowing of a thing, there is no room in you for fear"

--Patricia McKillip, The Riddle-Master of Hed

I am going to start filtering some of my more private musings. Since blogger does not have a tool for that, you will need to visit my Live Journal and ask to be friended there. I will continue to post Daily Gratitude and other subjects here.

There is also a FAQ for my Journal at the same link.

Home & back, part 2: jobs
Saturday, August 26, 2006 @ 09:52

The stated purpose of the quick trip to Arizona was so boy could interview for a position with a resort in Scottsdale. he had applied online the previous weekend and they called him Thursday morning while we were doing laundry. I decided it was better to drive out there with both us rather than sending him via plane. Gas is actually cheaper than flying on short notice and this way we could drop off a load of storage stuff, see friends, and investigate housing.

The job interview wasn't what we expected. It seems boy was confused by their job classficiation system and the chef's assistant had been confused about who was doing the interviewing from which of the inhouse kitchens. I'm not sure I would have authorized such an expensive trip if I'd known it was for entry-level line cook position rather than a higher/lead banquet position. Still, the interview went well and they may call him back for a second one in early September, once we're back in the Valley.

While we were in Phoenix, boy put in resumes at several other resorts and stopped in at the CC where he worked the 2004-2005 season. The Exec Chef there seemed willing to hire him back at a higher pay rate in one of several positions. We decided to stay over a second day so boy could meet with the specific supervisor he'd have if he returns. We also drove down to Tucson and boy put in resumes several places there as well as picking up local papers to find additional job listings.

boy has put out a bunch of resumes and applications online and in person in both Phoenix and Tucson. he will continue to do so in the next few weeks. While there is still a chance of something coming through from all these attempts, we know he can get a job at the CC. They have good benefits and he gets along well with the remaining staff (the crazymaker that tormented him previously is no longer employed there). he'd be doing gm & banquets line and making a higher pay rate. It's not the step up we'd hoped, but it's still not going backward to the same thing he used to do there.

Unfortunately, without a supervisory position, the only way we're going to be able to afford to live in the Phoenix area is if I'm working at least part-time to supplement boy's salary. While I'm still committed to finding alternative and creative ways of generating resources, the practicality is that we'll need guaranteed income to get us settled. So, time for me to dust off my resume and start contacting temp agencies and job boards. If I can keep it at 24-30 hrs a week, I'll still have time for art & projects as well as creating new resource avenues.
